How it works

Child support worksheets usually ask for income per month or per year, but pay slips come weekly, every two weeks, twice a month or by the hour. The converter turns any of these into a yearly amount first, then divides it back into every other period, so the figures always agree with each other.

A year has 52 weeks, 26 two-week pay periods, 24 half-month pay periods and 12 months. Hourly pay is multiplied by the hours you work a week and by 52. For example, $20 an hour for 40 hours a week is $41,600 a year,$3,466.67 a month and $800 a week.

Overtime is paid at your hourly rate times the overtime rate you enter. Five overtime hours a week at time and a half on top of $20 an hour for 40 hours raises the yearly figure to $49,400, or $4,116.67 a month. If you're paid a salary, the converter works out the equivalent hourly rate from the hours you enter.

A second job is added on at the period you choose. With $600 a month from a second job, the same $20-an-hour worker earns $48,800 a year in total.

Biweekly and twice-monthly pay are easy to mix up. $2,000 every two weeks is $52,000 a year, but $2,000 twice a month is $48,000, because there are two more biweekly paydays in a year. Some states set their own factors for converting weekly amounts to monthly ones; the child support calculator applies your state's rule, so you can also enter your pay there in its own period.

Frequently asked questions

How do I convert an hourly wage to monthly income?

Multiply the hourly rate by the hours you work a week and by 52 weeks, then divide by 12. At $20 an hour for 40 hours a week that is $41,600 a year, or $3,466.67 a month.

Is biweekly pay the same as twice a month?

No. Biweekly pay comes every two weeks, 26 times a year; twice-monthly pay comes 24 times a year. $2,000 every two weeks is $52,000 a year, while $2,000 twice a month is $48,000.

Should I include overtime and a second job?

Most states count income from all sources, including regular overtime and second jobs, though some treat irregular overtime differently. Include what you regularly earn and check your state’s explanation on its calculator page.

Is this gross or net income?

Gross: pay before taxes and deductions. The child support calculator starts from gross income and works out any taxes or deductions your state’s guidelines allow.

How the figures are worked out

The converter uses calendar arithmetic only (52 weeks, 26 two-week periods, 24 half-months and 12 months a year). What counts as income, and any state-specific conversion factors, come from each state's guidelines; see themethodology.
